Default MIDI playback sounds

so is there any way to change the sounds that are used when a MIDI file is being played? like say, visiting a website or playing a game that uses MIDI music? the ones that play back on my computer always sound so cheesy, there's gotta be a way to like change the sounds used, right?

back in the day, I had a Yamaha midi softsynth that came with a crappy soundcard and I had it selected as my midi playback device and it improved the midi sounds alot...
